Who are GIFT Cafe?
The GIFT Café is a small establishment based in and around Puddington on the Wirral. It is focused on helping elderly people suffering with Dementia with staff being trained by Dementia Friends to assist customers if and when they need it. GIFT also have another location based in Anfield, offering the same focus while still maintaining it's non - profit status.
GIFT also offers its 'GIFT - VANTASTIC' service, operating a travelling cafe out of a van with all sales going towards Dementia focused charities such as Admiral Nurses and the aforemented Demenia Friends among many others.
What is Dementia?
Dementia is not a single disease; it’s an overall term that covers a wide range of specific medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. Disorders grouped under the general term “Dementia” are caused by abnormal brain changes. These changes trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abilities, severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behavior, feelings and relationships.
Dementia can also be caused by damage to brain cells. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. When brain cells cannot communicate normally, thinking, behavior and feelings can be affected.
How is GIFT trying to help?
GIFT focuses on trying to help sufferers of Dementia by training all of their staff so that 'they know exactly how to make a person with Dementia feel comfortable'. Within the cafe, measures are taken to ensure that people with Dementia feel comfortable and welcomed. These can include playing ambient music at a lower volume or being on hand for reasurrance or assistance where and when it is needed.
